Why Are There Nuns All Up in This Street?

Overall Album Score: 10 out of 10

Do you really want to know what sucks? THE END OF THE BEATLES! The Beatles, at this point in their career, were certifiably at each other's throat so much that they couldn't work together any longer. Nevertheless, they decided to pull it together for one last time and come up with something to leave the world with. And what a wonderful thing to leave the world with!

And, as the end of the Beatles came ... so was the end of the 60's ... and so begun the decline of rock-and-roll! (...Oh well... It does declines more slowly than it took to develop.)

Album-creation speaking, this is probably the Beatles' greatest ... arguably. Sergeant Pepper might be a better-constructed album, but at least Abbey Road is a straighter exercise in rock-and-roll. And I think Abbey Road has better songs in it. Oh! And the end of this album is great, isn't it? A prime example of art-rock, and some good creativity from this band that is allegedly failing.

Man! This album is so classic I just don't have a whole lot to say about it. (I've been listening to it for such a long time, it seems ... and I've played it so much that it's been grossly overplayed.) Perfection comes with every note that is played! Excitement during every second! And ... um ... this album is so great that it is uncanny! It's not their most influential album, but it's a danged solid one.

Oh! And what about this George Harrison feller! He started writing relatively mediocre tracks in Beatles albums (Rubber Soul) and lo and behold, by Abbey Road, he's finally gotten to the point where he's writing the album's two best tracks! A true dark horse, he is.

Well ... I just can't say anything about this album that hasn't been said a million times, except for one thing: Abbey Road is like a bus full of nuns who have had too much Diet Coke to drink. I have no idea what it means, but at least I'm the first one to say it. Thus, my mission is accomplished.

Overall Album Score: 10 out of 10 (Ohhh... I'm thinking that this album should get a 10plus score overall. But it didn't work out like that, so I won't force it. Nevertheless, this is another completely essential Beatles release. A great conclusion to the Beatles' legacy.)

Average Song Score: 10 (The songs are pure magic! ... Every second is a classic!)

Artist Rating: 10 (A perfect album.)

Artist Rating: 10 (It's not the most daring thing the Beatles had ever done, but it is such a good ending of rock-and-roll's most significant band!)

Track Reviews

Come Together 10/10

If there is one Beatles song that is overplayed on the radio, it is "Come Together!" And why not? I might be sick of hearing it all the time, but at least it is a song that actually might deserve to be overplayed. The instruments sound menacing. It's not a pleasant song, but it's highly enjoyable ... for the 392034th time.

Something 10plus/10

For my money, this Harrison composition beats Lennon's "Come Together" by a mile. The melody is very catchy, but it's also utterly beautiful and movingly dynamic! Classic! The Dark Horse does come on top.

Maxwell's Silver Hammer 10/10

This Paul McCartney track might be more irrelevant and quirky, relatively speaking, but that does not negatively reflect this track's quality. McCartney melodies are always of a high-quality and this track is a remarkable example of this. (Ooh! The Beatles are even using early synthesizers ... I like it!) More classicness. (The lyrics are funny, too.)

Oh! Darling 10/10

The moment I think this album could possibly start sucking, we get another dynamic and engaging number (with a lot of screaming-singing). Hooks are perfect. And, an aspect I failed to mention beforehand about these tracks, but completely different from everything else in the album. Niiiiice.

Octopus's Garden 10/10

The only Ringo Starr classic! (Okay ... say what you like about the 'Boogaloo' song, but ... um ...) This is a very pleasant little novelty number. (It might technically have better suited for The White Album, but who cares? This is an album that survives not only on artistic quality, but also diversity ... so this song is perfect where it's at!) I remember singing this one at an elementary school musical concert, actually. So, this was probably my first experience with the Beatles.

(We sang this song when we had the cool elementary school music teacher, Mrs. Latimer. She quit the next year and then we had Mrs. Harshbarger, who was a total nerd and started making us sing cheesy songs about how 'adjectives are great' and I'll probably never forgive her because I still remember those stupid songs and they keep crawling back into my head ... again ... and again ... and again. Anyway, if I ever find myself in a mental institute, I bet the doctors would be wondering where I picked up those songs that I'm always muttering ... oh boy that was a tangent. Must get back to the next review! Though, I must add that I am probably an unusual individual for remembering such details from my elementary years.)

I Want You (She's So Heavy) 9.5/10

This is the first song on the album that I'm not totally impressed with. It's a sprawling 7:50 minute epic that goes on and on. But it's of a very high quality! I can enjoy it perfectly ... just not two times in a row. Eh... what am I complaining about? There's nothing to complain about!

Here Comes the Sun 10plus/10

After that 'heavy' previous track, we get one of the most utterly pleasant and optimistic songs known to mankind. And guess what? This one, too, was composed by our man George Harrison. Gorgeous! Absolutely gorgeous!

Because 9.5/10

Hey! Would you quit creating such perfect songs? I want to insult somebody, dang it! This is a slow and beautiful song! And it's rad-eriffic. (Oh yeah ... when I call a song "rad-eriffic," you know that it's got to be good.) I'm thinking, though, that this song is only slightly feebler than some of their previous tracks, which is the only reason I docked a half-point.

You Never Give Me Your Money 10/10

Another major Beatles classic. This one is longer than the average Beatles song. It's also much quicker and quite a bit more enjoyable than "I Want You," so I'm perfectly happy!

Sun King 10/10

I believe this is where the major bit of art rock begins. All of the songs from here until the very end are strung together. This one is slow and operatic. It's enjoyable! Though it might be more feeble than some other songs that got a 10, it's barely over two minutes, and I can't even hope to get bored through it.

Mean Mr. Mustard 10/10

This part is slightly goofier, but the hooks are stronger than ever. (The exaggerated instruments here are the highlight.) It's also fairly quick (and short ... only a minute long.)

Polythene Pam 9/10

You know! They could have extended all of these songs and made a brand new album out of it! Oh well! This is another catchy 1-minute song that is set to a sort of tribal beat.

She Came in Through the Bathroom Window 10/10

Whoaaaaaagh! This is my favorite bit of the short-strung-together ditties. Unlike most of the others, this one is nearly 2 minutes. The melody is so catchy, that it would make one think that Paul McCartney was just being a show-off by not extending this one! (Anyone of lesser talent would have extended that one to being their number one hit!)

Golden Slumbers 10/10

Well, this one doesn't sound that connected with the other tracks. Oh well! It's slow, dynamic, tuneful, and even moving! (A minute and thirty seconds? This one seems much more timeless than that.)

Carry That Weight 10/10

The loodieieieieie! Another moving and dynamic track (and it is strung together with the last track). Also, it revisits the same theme that was introduced in "You Never Give Me Your Money," which is something that was unusual for a rock album of the 60s ... although the Beatles had done that themselves in Sergeant Pepper.

The End 9.5/10

The end??? Nooooooooo!!!! Never! Hmph! This is a loud and rocking song ... it's not the greatest song on the album, but it is a great song. It's not the most memorable song, though. I think I only docked the track-score by a point only because it is the last Beatles song! When you take it in that context, then it is quite touching!

Her Majesty 9.5/10

I'm not exactly sure why this little bit was added, in spite of the last track being titled "The End" and being a perfectly good end-song to close a band's legacy. Oh well. Relatively speaking, this track wouldn't demand a true 9.5, but it's only 23 seconds long. And it's pleasant. Yeaaaaaaaah.

This is probably my favourite Beatles album to listen to. It's an interesting ride from begining to end. There are only two things I don't really like about the album: IMO, the end of "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" drags on for a bit too long, and "Her Majesty" doesn't fit at the end of the album. Other than those things ABBEY ROAD is a very enjoyable record.

I think is should have been the top Beatle album if not the top album of all time. This just shows how good the Beatles were by putting all differences aside and doing what they do best, play GOOD music. Golden Slumbers, Carry That Weight, and The End is the most enjoyable three song I have ever heard. The funny thing that George did not even reconize the songs on the Anthology special features. And come to think of it these song are starting to sound alot like some Wings songs. Sorry for the misspelled words.
