The Blast Grasters had other albums than this ... Click on this link to find out more, freak! Mast Pasters Vol. X
Overall Album Score: 9.0 out of 10 After you’ve finished listening to all the Beatles albums, you might be thinking: “Wow, that was some wild thrill ride! … Why does it have to end?” Well, I’m here to tell you that it doesn’t have to end! There are still two more CDs that you have to get … and then you pretty much have everything you need. The first is Past Masters Vol. 1, which contains all the singles that you can’t get on the current CD releases of all the early Beatles albums. However, like the Beatles’ early albums, there are some relatively dispensable stuff on here. … But, really, after listening to crap like “Kiss,” “Foreigner,” … “Barry White,” it’s difficult not to appreciate The Beatles dispensable stuff to its fullest. This isn’t an “album,” so it’s almost pointless to drag this review on for too long. (I mean, I could drag this on for ages … you know how I am …) The major highlights of the album include the unforgettable “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” “From Me to You,” and “She Loves You.” And that’s not all! This album comes with your very own squeeze monkey plush toy! Overall Album Score: 9.0 out of 10 (All the early Beatles songs that you don’t get in the reissues. This is a must to complete your collection … plus, it has some of the band’s biggest hits on it.) Average Song Score: 9.0 (There are a few inessential songs thrown in with a bunch of irreplaceable classics. Overall, however, this is great material from rock-and-roll’s greatest band.) Album Tilt: N/A (This is a compilation disc and not subject to an album score.) Artist Rating: N/A (Ditto. I can’t really artistically rate a bunch of singles.) Track Reviews Love Me Do 9/10 The happy-go-lucky early-Beatles give us what they’ve always done best: PLEASANT SONGS! Hooooooooooray! Really, I don’t know why I have to review this. Every Beatles song is a great, basically. I’m not sure that it would deserve a full 10, but it is a solid 9-getter. From Me To You 10/10 Even among all the early Beatles stuff, this one is a standout. The melody is perfect and catchy … and … yeah, I’m sure you’ve heard this one before. Early 60s pop-rock at its best. Thank You Girl 9/10 I don’t recognize this one as a famous early Beatles song … it does borrow a lot from the early R&B at the time, so this isn’t an essential Beatles classic, but it’s a very pleasant one just the same. She Loves You 10/10 Ooooooooof! A ***CLASSIC*** among classics! (Another one? … There will be a few more in this compilation disc.) The tune is as timeless as the constellations … I’m going to be happy for the rest of my life. I’ll Get You 8.5/10 Happy-go-lucky … it’s not as timeless as “She Loves You,” but it’s The Beatles, isn’t it? … So it’s good. That’s what that means. Beatles = good. (That equation is about the only thing we can be sure of on this planet.) I Want To Hold Your Hand 10plus/10 As we all know, “I Want to Hold Your Hand” was the Beatles’ first No. 1 hit in the United States … and, for once, the American people found something good to pick off the shelves in mass quantities. What a great song! … … … … … … Why am I reviewing this? Everybody knows everything about The Beatles, anyway, right? … … Well, everyone ought to. This Boy 8/10 Verrrrrrrrrrrry derivative early pop-rock stuff. (And, yes, it’s a Lennon/McCartney original.) Just the same, it is an immaculate pop-rock song, if it sounds too much like a golden oldie. (…I guess that was the type of songs they were making back then, huh?) Komm, Gib Mir Deine Hand Whoah! They forgotted how to sing “I Want to Hold Your Hand” in Englishsh, so they just decided to make up a language! … What a strange language! … … … I’m not sure why they had to put this in the album, but they might as well have. The CD would have cost the same with or without it. I’m not going to score this one. … Nor the next one, which is in the same confounded language. Sie Liebt Dich SHE LOVES ME! … but she doesn’t speak English. … Hmmm … This’ll never work out. Long Tall Sally 8/10 The famous old R&B song gets a spirited performance from Paul McCartney … and the instrumentals were performed very well by the band! Inessential, but entertaining. I Call Your Name 8.5/10 Among the all the other Beatles songs, this would have to be a second-rate one … but it’s still totally excellent. HOOOOOOOORAAAAAAAAAAAAY FOR THE EARLY BEATLES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Slow Down 8/10 A solid cover of an old R&B song … They were obviously having fun singing and performing this … and I’m having fun listening to it. Other than that … Matchbox 8/10 Another cover. Performed very well. Fun to listen to. (I hear Ringo.) Hooray! I Feel Fine 10/10 Another utterly famous (and utterly delightful) Beatles tune. This one, of course, is an essential one, and … Oh yes. ***CLASSIC*** She’s a Woman 9/10 …I’m only glad that she’s not a man… This Lennon/McCartney original is a derivative R&B type song, but it’s a very skilled one. What else could you expect? Bad Boy 8.5/10 An old R&B cover sporting a fun vocal performance from John Lennon. It’s a really good song! Nicely performed, and … everything. Yes It Is 9.5/10 This is a sweet’n’slow Beatles original with an utterly engaging, lucid melody that’ll surely make you happy. I’m Down 9.5/10 This derivative R&B original was performed with spirit! (And spirit is good!) This isn’t a famous Beatles song or anything, but it’s a good one for all you kiddies out there. The Past Masters will not rest until you send me a comment here, right freaking now! |
