A Rush of Head to the Blood

Overall Album Score: 8.5 out of 10

Even more serious this time than Parachutes! ... Is this band as humorless as all that? ... Since when did people like serious bands anyway? ... Oh wait ... Styx was kinda popular in the late 70s, and they were the dumbest serious band that ever existed, maybe ...

Not to say that Coldplay is like Styx! They have a similar attitude, though. Style over substance! Be serious! Give people who want "smart" music something to listen to! ... It doesn't matter if the idea is flawed from the start, just dress it up! And be careful! ... You know, I really don't care for music like that. You could argue that I claim to like early Genesis ... but they had plenty of substance to go along with their style (and they weren't really serious ... not really) ... Coldplay, to be quite honest, doesn't have the greatest "substance!" They're simply average when it comes to songwriting ... And without humor of any sort, how on earth can I be expected to love an album such as A Rush of Blood to the Head?

Unlike Styx, though, Coldplay is actually a decent band--there's some talent to go along with all that artistic pretension! They're songs for the most part make good listens, and the moods they created in the studio were all very nice indeed! ... Just like it was on Parachutes, the only reason to love Coldplay is because of the production. It's not a *great* reason, but ... heck! The albums sure sound nice!

Overall Album Score: 8.5 out of 10 (A good album ... Unlike what everybody says, this isn't a great album for the modern-day, but ... I certainly can think of worse bands that mass-sell albums these days.)

Average Song Score: 8.5 (Solid songs all around on this album ... They all sound important, and they're all perfectly-formed ... without actually having a memorable tune!)

Album Tilt: 8.5 (Solid ... some songs are better than others, but this is fairly consistent and it flows well.)

Artist Rating: 8.5 (Maybe they're too serious for their own good ... but at least there's substance to go along with their pretentiousness.)

Track Reviews

Politik 9/10

A song that seems to be played more for its dramatics than anything else ... And, if that's all Coldplay wanted to do with it, they did a pretty good job at it! It was produced very well by the band ... played well ... The tune isn't very catchy, but it doesn't seem like it was supposed to be. ... This is a masterpiece in the artistic sense of the word (if you want to go there), but ... they sort of forgot about melodic hooks in the process.

In My Place 8.5/10

Definitely, this song was VERYYYY well put together. I mean, this song is so well and intricately arranged that it rivals even The Beatles during their Sgt. Pepper days in that respect! But ... again, their melodies are hardly Beatles-esque. Sure, this is a good song to listen to, but it needs a hookier melody!!

God Put a Smile On Your Face 8/10

Is there any doubt about The Beatles connection? This sounds exactly like something that would have appeared on The White Album except the melody isn't very good. ... Yet, again, it's so masterfully crafted, that the lack of great melody can be overlooked. (It's certainly a *good* melody, but it's important not to let that get carried away! Coldplay is *not* the greatest band out there.)

The Scientist 9.5/10

This is a better melody, even though it doesn't exactly contain deathly hooks! It sounds awfully cranky, though, but there's plenty to like about this song. It's a perfectly-tuned moody song for all you depressed maniacs out there who like this sort of thing...

Clocks 9/10

They really *know* how to create these moods and atmospheres! I had no idea that a band could become popular just because of that! ... I mean, it doesn't particularly matter if they have Paul McCartney or Stevie Wonder coming in and writing good melodies. Isn't that weird to anybody else? But anyway, "Clocks" is a very good song that's well-produced and creates some really great moods .... but does it have a memorable melody? NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Daylight 8/10

Daylight was a really horrible movie starring Sylvester Stallone. I watched it the evening before my first day of high school! (Isn't it amazing how I remember silly stuff like that?) Well, this particular song is VERY dreary and it seems to be on the verge of being overproduced, but ... it's not. It's really quite nice. The melody seems more complicated than it really is, though. Try turning the music off and humming it. Yeah ... two seconds into doing that and you probably already bored yourself.

Green Eyes 9/10

Try humming this song whilst standing on your head (you can get that rush everybody's talking about)! ... On second thought, don't try that. My keys feel out of my pocket and landed on my (rather large) nose, which kind of hurt. ... Well this is a very down-to-earth ACOUSTIC song ... and it's actually pretty good. The melody isn't everything, but ... it's dang good compared to "Daylight."

Warning Sign 8/10

Speaking of large noses, the kid next door to my house called me "big nose" once. That didn't really sink in until now ... nasty kid ... Speaking of nasty kids, Coldplay sure is BORING!!!! Yeah!!!!!!! That didn't sink in until now, either! ... This song, again, doesn't have a great melody and ... the production, while nice, certainly isn't among the album's best. ... This is more on the overly-dramatic side. ... It picks up steam at the end and then tapers off to an emotionless piano. Bland!

A Whisper 7/10

A whisper? More like a drowned-out mess! ... I can't say I like this song because of the way it was produced this time, that's for sure (even though ... yes, it was produced nicely ... just not that nicely). This song is difficult to enjoy ... but not difficult to listen to.

A Rush of Blood to the Head 9.5/10

THE TITLE TRACK IS GOOD!!!! The chorus was really nicely done ... all professional and overly serious and stuff in a good way ... It sounds all polished, and perfect, and ... um ... I can't give it a 10 just because it takes itself so seriously, again, without having a great melody. But the melody is *good* (the production and arranging are what makes this song money, though) ... so this is an excellent song!

Amsterdam 8.5/10

...It's boring, definitely, but it's too deep and tasteful for me ever to dislike it. It's a piano led song that sounds like a depressed Elton John. ... It almost predictably picks up its pace and rocks out at the very end of it ... Again, this is a pretty good song, but it's just a bit difficult for me to enjoy.

I haven't heard Rush of Blood yet aside from the singles, I'm not in a big hurry to do so right now. But let me say that "Clocks" is one of those songs that was MEANT to be sentimental. It was overplayed spring 2003, my senior year. How appropriate. Hearing that song makes me think of all the sentimental icky senior stuff, especially senior prom. So I love that song big time.
