Love and Theft and Cheesecake

Overall Album Score: 8.5 out of 10

And Bob Dylan follows up that excellent Time Out of Mind album with this verrrrry fun album! This time, Bob Dylan is having fun with his music again (as opposed to Time Out of Mind when he sounded a bit depressed). Again, Bob Dylan chooses to deliver a solid set of tunes! However, he's not sitting back and performing his songs passively. Rather, he's croonin', rock-and-rollin' ... and having a super time in the process. Yeah, it's always nice when you get to notice that the artist is having fun with his work.

"Mississippi" is a really lovely ballad-type thingy. I also enjoyed the Chuck Berrying "Summer Days," the luverly ballad "Suger Baby," and the album opener "Tweedle Dee & Tweedle Dum." I enjoyed all the other songs on here, too ... there's not a stinker in sight!

A few times in here, I wondered why he was writing old-time, Frank Sinatra pop ditties ... I guess it's alright if Bob Dylan wants to do that, but does anyone in particular want to hear Bob Dylan do Frank Sinatra? I sure as heck don't! Oh well ... these songs aren't bad whatsoever. Sinatra himself probably would have liked to cover one or two of them songs, I reckon, if he were around.

Overall Album Score: 8.5 out of 10 (Bob Dylan does it again in his late career! This is a very good album that doesn't even threaten to become boring!)

Average Song Score: 8.6 (Very good songs by Dylan, and they're totally untypical of him, too!)

Album Tilt: 8.5 (Pretty good, although, it doesn't hold together as well as an album as Time Out of Mind)

Artist Rating: 8.5 (This isn't nearly as daring as Time Out of Mind was ... this album is a fun one, though!)

Track Reviews

Tweedle Dee & Tweedle Dum 9/10

...It's not a revolutionary song whatsoever! It's a major throwback to the 60s ... the simple riff it's based on, the simple guitar licks ... but for some reason, it was made into one very solid and entertaining ditty! ... Really neat!

Mississippi 9.5/10

Very pretty, indeed! This is a very pleasant ballad that works very well on an emotional resonant level. It seems to go on FOREVER, but I don't miss a single moment of my life.

Summer Days 9/10

Bob Dylan changes his name to Chuck Berry for this one ... and this is very good, as well! The electric guitar licks are strange, though. They seem to be stifled. At any rate, this makes me want to jump up on the coffee table and do the twist, baby. I'm not sure why Bob Dylan wanted to try Chuck Berry on for size (so late in his career), but it's a worthwhile effort, certainly.

Bye and Bye 8.5/10

Bob ...... Freaking heck, why are you singing this crap??? ... Who are you? Tony Flipping Bennet?...... Okay, I've already sort of figured out that this was going to be an unconventional Dylan album, and if he wants to indulge himself into a little lounge singing stuff, then that's fine by me. He's Bob Dylan, after all.

Lonesome Day Blues 8.5/10

Yeah ... We've heard Bob Dylan do this sort of thing before. It's R&B! ... And this is pretty good! I usually don't like R&B that much, but this is really good.

Floater (Too Much To Ask) 8.5/10

What's this? Skiffle? ... I don't know. I don't even think I know what skiffle actually sounds like ... but I think this is pretty close! It's a light-hearted ditty using a light banjo type instrument and ... some violins. Heck, I have no idea what I'm talking about. Maybe this is old music-hall? ... Eh, it's 2 o'clock in the morning and I don't care. I think this is a really good song no matter what it is.

High Water (For Charley Patton) 8.5/10

I know what this song is! ... It's hillbilly music! that's done all dramatic-like. Yeah. It's like that one stupid song by that one stupid guy used to sing in the 50s. (Hey! It's very early in the morning, remember? ... How can I be expected to figure out who that stupid guy I'm thinking of in the 50s is?) Anyway, this is a pretty good song, even though it's hillbilly done all dramatic-like.

Moonlight 8/10

Bob "Doris Day" Dylan. Freakin' A, man.

Honest With Me 8.5/10

Bob Dylan, can I actually be honest with you? ... Your song ain't bad at all ... actually, it's kind of fun. But ... uhhhh ... it's not *great* ... What can I say? I DEMAND ANOTHER FREAKING "LIKE A ROLLING ****FRIKVCINGG*** STONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Po' Boy 8.5/10

Is that like the British version of "the Dough Boy," Pilsbury's lovable, tummy-squishable mascot??? ... Oh, sorry. I'm getting stupidly goofy again, aren't I? ... I've been trying to cut down on that like Dr. Phil has been trying to cut down on carbs. ... I'm going to be serious now, I promise. ... Yeah, the seriousness ought to come at any moment ...

Hello! This song is pleasant. In fact, it might just be *too* pleasant. ... Bob, you're not supposed to be so pleasant, DUDEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.

Cry Awhile 8/10

Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah ... I don't care about R-and-freaking-B. ... Although the time-sequence change in here makes this particularly interesting.

Sugar Baby 9/10

Bob Dylan closes this album with a very nice, and very luverly ballad! ... Hooray for Bob Dylan and his very nice and very luverly ballads! ...... This has a nice tune and everything!! ... Perhaps it's a little bit overlong, but so what? It's purdy.
