Peter Criss wants you to go back to Kiss's main page

Peter Criss, Major Spaz

Overall Album Score: 6.8 out of 10

I'm going to tell you right away that if you're a Kiss fan, you are going to want to send me some hate-mail. Heck! Going through the Kiss main page, grumbling at my non-excitement over all of Kiss's "classic" albums and then seeing that I scored the 1978 solo album of Kiss drummer Peter Criss higher than any of those is probably justification enough for hate mail. When I give the "whys" below, you are probably going to hate me even more! Don't worry, though. I like being hated. It's fuel or something. So vent all of your anger, and send me loads of hate mail!

This [in]famous stunt Kiss pulled in 1978, each members recording their own solo album and then releasing them the same day turned out to be a lot more interesting than I imagined. (This is the first Kiss solo album I'm reviewing, so I'm sort of introducing them here.) Each and every one of these might be questionable-in-quality, but each and every one of them strike me-to my surprise-as much more listenable and enjoyable than average Kiss albums.

Peter Criss is interesting because it has much better melodies than average Kiss albums. This is completely unlike them, too ... it's packed with either a sentimental-like ballad or a party-time boogie. Alright ... all of these tracks are SCHLOCKY ... but if you have halfway-decent melodies, then who cares? If you really want to get technical, this stuff really isn't any more schlocky than when the four guys are together (you *know* that stuff is generic) ... the sound is just heavier and grittier.

And so that's why Peter Criss scores higher than regular Kiss albums. And I will make no apology for it.

Overall Album Score: 6.8 out of 10 Yes. It's true. This album scored higher than all the previous Kiss albums. I'm more impressed with the actual melodies on here than anything, however. There are some good ones! It's 100 percent schlock, though.)

Average Song Score: 7.4 (I wouldn't go so far as to call this an *admirable* set of songs, but as long as you're willing to accept that these are a bunch of schlocky and generic songs from the drummer of Kiss, then you'll probably find this one to be okay. Most of these tunes are better written than the ones on Kiss albums.)

Album Tilt: 6.5 (Noooooo... The thought of giving this a score of a 7 makes me shudder.)

Artist Rating: 6.5 (Ditto.)

Track Reviews

I'm Gonna Love You 8.5/10

Whoah. This is a dance-boogie ... and it's surprisingly catchy and verrrrry enjoyable! I'm not sure if I was ever allowed to enjoy something ever done by Kiss ... much less a solo album by the drummer. Yikes! This is a fun song. (He's even a pretty good singer ... a better singer, even, than Ringo if I'm allowed to make such a statement.)

You Matter to Me 7/10

Another catchy, upbeat song. It was well performed, well written ... the instrumentation sounds very plasticky and too polished, but I suppose I would have to complain about that all over the album. Well, this one in particular has a too-polished horn in the background. Cheese. But it's basically well written cheese.

Tossin' and Turnin' 7/10

Grittier! But this isn't true grit. ("Well, come see a fat old man some time!") Indeed, this is just another boogie, party song! But at least it's fun. And it has a melody. I get sick of the melody after awhile, but ... eh ... count yer blessings.

Don't Let Me Down 6/10

Awwwwwwww... this one brings me to tears ..................... NOT! This is one of those fake romantic ballads. It's pretty bad. But, again, it has a fine melody. The backing instrumentals are very generic. They gone one thing going for it, though: they're pleasant.

That's the Kind of Sugar Papa Like 6.5/10

Glammy ... catchy ... even more rockingful! The chorus really drives me nuts. The rest of the song isn't much better. Hmmm... I like the fact that it's rockingful, though. There's a decent-enough of an electric guitar solo in here as well.

Easy Thing 7/10

This overly dramatic, sugary ballad isn't that bad, actually. The melody is good ... and I can easily get caught-up in these dramatics. Heck! This even proves that Peter Criss might even be a more effective crooner than Michael Bolton! ... That's not really a hard thing for someone to accomplish, though.

Rock Me, Baby 7.5/10

Another generic Glam-boogie! It's silly, quick, and so inoffensive that I can't help thinking that this one is fun! By no means is this a classic, but I really wish that Kiss would do more songs like this ... they're generic anyway, but this is actually generic in a semi-good way.

Kiss the Girl Goodbye 9/10

Dangit! This sugary ballad is actually GOOD. Dude! Seriously, this one sounds like a lightweight John Lennon song or something. Yeah ... the melody isn't nearly as complex as a Lennon composition might be ... but still! This is GOOD! The highest score I've ever given to a Kiss composition yet was a 9 ... and, whoah, the band's drummer managed that on his own! Wicked! (This'll probably be hotly contested ... but I say bring it on!) This is a song that's so sweet and filled with so much syrup that I can hardly contain myself.

Hooked on Rock and Roll 8/10

This is another completely inoffensive, enjoyable, and generic boogie. This is really peculiar that these are so much more enjoyable than actual Kiss songs. I'm so giddy that I'm practically wetting my pants.

I Can't Stop the Rain 7.5/10

A verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry convincing impression of Meat Loaf. And, indeed, this is actually comparable to Meat Loaf if I do say myself. The ballads on Bat Out of Hell are better, to be sure, but ... not much.
