The Libertinas

Overall Album Score: 9.4 out of 10

Well, folks, here's a worthwhile recent band that's certainly worth BOOOTYYY getting into! They're really big in Great (i.e., Greater than France) Britain right now (I, in America, never heard of them by means of the news media, but that's because our news media is currently being run by Communist Nazis like Ran Dather).

This band pretty much takes everything that was ever good about British pop-rock, British alternative-rock, and British hard-rock and rolls it all into one little bundle! Indeed, there are strong influences of The Smiths, The Beatles, and even some of the harder-rock pipple like the Who.

At any rate, this is an exceptional album, and I like it! ... I mean ... dudes! How can you say no to albums that have songs such as the Clash-like "Can't Stand Me Now," the Beatles-like "Last Post on the Bugle," the inspired "The Man Who Would Be King" (my vote for the best song on the album), and the emotional "Music When the Lights Go Out?"

There are other good songs in here ... many other good songs. Not a single song on here bored me or failed to impress me in any respect whatsoever. Indeed, this is good! Rush to the CD store and get it ASAPPPPP! And get some Rush too at the CD store!!! ... Okay, on second thought, don't get Rush. But get some Libertines, because your life might depend on it. (You never know.)

Overall Album Score: 9.4 out of 10 (This is a highly recommended alternative rock album! It's fun, refreshing, and unique!)

Average Song Score: 9.3 (These are some *very* good songs! ... Every one of them is both interesting and fun to listen to.)

Album Tilt: 9.5 (A very fun and consistent album throughout.)

Artist Rating: 9.5 (This is also a rather unique album. Even though it was kind of easy to pick out the band's influences, I haven't heard anything quite like this before.)

Track Reviews

Can't Stand Me Now 10/10

This song definitely has the feel of an 80s alternative-rock song ... (you know, something reminiscent of The Smiths) ... and there's also a clear 50s rock (or possibly punk) connection about it. Eh ... whatever this song is, it's wonderful! The melody is great, and the arrangements are very busy and satisfying. It's also a song that's very easily liked. A good one!

Last Post on the Bugle 10/10

Geez, man! What's with these solid melodies? It's not fair!!! ... Dangit, though! I'm sure glad I'm listening to this, though. The melody is really good and the instrumentation is even better. It's also got the feel good feeling of an early Beatles pop song. How more awesome could it get?

Don't Be Shy 9/10

Okay, "Last Post on the Bugle" was a little bit sloppy, but this is sloppy enough to be a bit of a detractor. Besides that, the melody isn't quite as excellent. This has a more hard-rockey type feel ... so, I guess the slop has its reasons! And it is still a good song. Very good, in fact.

The Man Who Would Be King 10/10

This song sounds classic! ... Indeed, it's not particularly original (I mean ... this still sounds a lot like The Smiths and them...) But, whoah. This is a good song! I really like the way they worked in the Jewish-music theme in this. The instrumentation, again, is a blast, and ... I really enjoy this.

Music When the Lights Go Out 9.5/10

This is slower paced and less fun, but it still has a wonderful melody and great instrumentation! ... And, really, the only reason that it's less fun is because it's slower paced. It's still a very likable song. Very likable.

Marcissist 9/10

A very fast paced song. It's really entertaining and fun! ... Oh yeah, baby! This has a post-punk feel to it ... and it's so nice to hear that sort of stuff performed with such verve!

The Ha Ha Wall 9/10

Geez! More solid stuff! ... This has a fun, lighthearted feel to it, yet it's interesting, too! ... This has an almost R.E.M. feel to it, vaguely. There's so much to enjoy about this!

Arbeit Macht Frei 9/10

...Shouldn't that be Albeit Mach Fry? ... No? ... okay. Well, this is one very short song, but it's such a fast one that ... no wonder it's so short! It's very fun during its short-lived existence.

Campain of Hate 8.5/10

Hmm... This is a very strong 8.5, I'd say. I don't care a whole lot for the choppy guitars in the background. Even though this is still pretty creative, it's not as refreshingly so as the previous songs on the album. An 8.5 is still a very good score! Don't get me wrong!

What Katie Did 9/10

This is another 50s pop and 80s alternative lovechild. The vocals sound a lot like Morrissey, but I guess that would make sense! He was 80s alternative! ... At any rate, I like the melody, and the song has an engaging quality.

Tomblands 8.5/10

More good stuff from the Libertines! ... The hard instrumentation is very fun!

The Saga 9/10

This seems to be just an extension to "Tomblands." It's another hard-sounding song, but I like the melody on this one slightly better.

Road to Ruin 9.5/10

A really good song, I do believe! I really enjoy the melody! I think it's wonderful! And I also enjoy the instrumentation ... it's fun, hard, and creativity abounds! Hurrah!

What Became of the Likely Lads 9.5/10

The final song of the album! ... And it's another fun one! ... It's fast paced and it's got a good tune. ... It's pretty much just like most everything else on the album, though, but in this case, that's a good thing! ... As the song fades out, don't turn it off, because there's a little acoustic ditty afterward.
