Overall Album Score: 8.8 out of 10 Wellllllllllllllllllll... This is the Moody Blues! Take 'em or leave 'em! They're these mighty fine and talented songwriters ... but you're either going to love the stuffing out of them or want to *beat* the stuffing out of them. It's all about their style! A few people on this planet probably love the Moody Blues style ... their echoey vocals ... their sometimes very-muddled-sounding Mellotron ... and utilizing these aspects to attempt to get around their melodic short-comings. Unfortunately, I find this style of theirs quite a bit of a hindrance. I just don't like it! ... I can't get into it! The way they use that Mellotron on here sometimes strikes me as being more annoying than beautiful. Had they chosen a different path, this album-score might have been much higher! As it stands, it's merely an above average, excellent album that has some incredibly beautiful moments on it. My favorite song on here is "Candle of Life" where The Moody Blues don't rely too much on this muddled Mellotron and concentrate completely on how to make the song beautiful! The other songs might have been as lovely, but they utilize the annoying Mellotron. I still gave these songs scores of 8.5's and 9's, but that's still underachieving! The Moody Blues are wonderful, but this album just doesn't scream out "CLASSIC" at me. Overall Album Score: 8.8 out of 10 (This is a very solid album with some very solid and usually beautiful songs in it. There's nothing completely memorable in here ... I wouldn't get this album unless you have been converted into a Moody Blues fan from Days of Future Passed, which I'm sad to say failed to convert ME! But this is a very good album. I've listened to it. I should know.) Average Song Score: 8.9 (There are a few 10s in here! This is a fairly luverly set of tunes. There might have been more 9.5s and 10s, though, if it wasn't for that crazy, muddled Mellotron style of theirs that I don't like.) Album Tilt: 8.5 (Screw it! I can't get excited about this album ... no matter how much I try!) Artist Rating: 9.0 (The Moody Blues are pretty cool rock-and-roll artists!) Track Reviews Higher and Higher 9/10 This one starts with an absolutely echoey choral notes with airplane noises in the background (...at one point, this almost reminds me of the Simpsons' theme song...) After all of that, it all picks up a little bit of steam, and the Moodies deliver us one pretty darn cool psychedelic song! They give us a spoken poem in here, but it sounds much more in-tuned with the regular song than what the Moodies have tried dumping on us in the past. Quite nice! Eyes of a Child 1 9/10 Maybe this one takes too long to start up its wonderful chorus, but that's okay 'cause this is art music! Actually, the stuff it piddles around in whilst it is not in the chorus is quite beautiful and tuneful, too. So I shan't complain about not'ing. Floating 10/10 Oh! What's this? A strong melody throughout? Cool! I don't think having a strong melody throughout a song will catch on as a musical style, though. Eh! I'm just kidding, of course! This is a wonderful song that's both beautiful and does not piddle too much. Eyes of a Child II 8.5/10 This one is much quicker than the previous "Eyes of a Child." Even though it certainly has a greater and more defined melody, it's not nearly as thoughtful as that other song. It's also much shorter ... which I don't really consider a bad thing. I Never Thought I'd Live to Be a Hundred 9.5/10 Now *this* is a very thoughtful, tuneful, and wonderful song ... but dang it! Why couldn't they have carried it on for a few more minutes? I know they're going to revisit it later on in the album, but ... hmph! Beyond 8.5/10 This is just a big instrumental with a lot of weird Moody Blues psychedelic stuff (it's not generic flower power, though) and some airplane-like noises for good effect. Out and In 7.5/10 Oh boy ... you ask a stupid question and you get a stupid answer! (I never really asked the question, but dang it! I got an answer!) This one is certainly *not* an instrumental, and it is certainly *not* a piddler, but this one isn't really that good. The melody isn't really that good and the arranging is getting just a tiny bit ugly here. Gypsy 9/10 Oh man ... The Moodies haven't changed their style at all with this one. The tune is fine ... the instrumentation is as muddled as it usually has been. This strikes me as being pretty good, but I really don't think that it's so incredibly special. Eternity Road 9/10 HIPPIES!!!!! ... er, sorry. That's an old rant. ... "Eternity Road" is another solid Moody Blues tune. What else is new? Candle of Life 10/10 Awwwwwwwww! That weird muddled Moody Blues instrumentation that was ever-so-crappiful on the previous two tracks are officially NOT HERE, and we get this utterly gorgeous tune that's just ... just ... aw! SPLENDID! This is my favorite track here. Sun is Still Shining 8.5/10 ...Thank goodles for that! If the Sun stopped shining ... it would be very cold. But at least that would solve our global warming problems! This one is more of an Eastern-derived tune that's pretty fun to listen to. Pleasant ... melodic ... the arranging isn't so danged muddled ... I Never Thought I'd Live to Be a Million 8.5/10 I'd imagine that if I ever lived to be a million, I'd write a 30-second song about it, too. It's not nearly long enough! I really like the melody! It should have been longer! Watching and Waiting 9/10 ...And here's the grand finale! It's slow, depressing ... it's not particularly beautiful ... but I like it ... overall ... It gets better whenever it picks up steam. Oh ... this album is over ... cool. Do you think that eating children children could solve the world's hunger problem? Nah ... I think eating Michael Bolton would solve the world's hunger problem, actually. Leave your thoughts about this semi-controversial topic here! |
