Overall Album Score: 9.1 out of 10 Bossanova??? HAVE YOU LOST YOUR MIND?!?!?!? Oh wait ... I'm listening to this album now ... Uh, no, I don't think this would be the type of thing a bunch of geriatrics would boogie to in their nursing homes. ... If they do dance to this, then old people are a lot cooler than I thought they were. Anyway, this is still the awesome hard-edged grungy stuff that The Pixies are revered for. Like their previous albums, there are some songs in here that are just #*H($*HT($* AWESOME!!!!! Namely, I'm thinking about the utterly screamified "Rock Music," the kinda-poppy "Velouria," and "Ana" and "Is She Weird" ... and all the other songs aren't far behind. Really, it'll be a cold day in Miami Beach before I'd start complaining that The Pixies aren't good songwriters and performers. With this album, we also see *VERY MINOR* drawback (and believe me ... it's sooooo minor that it's pretty much negligible). These songs seems ***slightly*** less edgy than they did in their previous two albums (which accounts for the decreased score) and the album as a whole seems ***slightly*** less amazing. Taking that into account, this is still an awesome album that would take yo momma out ... all night. Overall Album Score: 9.1 out of 10 (Another classic album! There are some really excellent songs on here ... some of the best this band has ever done. Overall, Bossanova isn't quite as *AMAZING* as the previous two albums, but it's essential nevertheless.) Average Song Score: 9.4 (More excellent song from the Pixies. These are some of the most immaculate songs the band has done to this point.) Album Tilt: 9.0 (While the songs might be more immaculate, I can't help feeling that The Pixies lost a bit of their vision and energy. They're still awesome, though.) Artist Rating: 9.0 (See above.) Track Reviews Cecilia Ann 9.5/10 As grandpappy always said, the best way to start out a good album is to have a kick-butt, two-minute rock-n-roll instrumental. Rock Music 10/10 And what a better way to follow up a kick-butt instrumental than to have a two-minute song that's not an instrumental ... indeed, this song might be the exact opposite of an instrumental from a point of view. There's not so much singing on here, but SCREAMING. And ... dudes, Kurt Cobain couldn't even hold a candle to this level of screaming. Not only that but the music is really intense. Velouria 10/10 I can't say that I've ever met anyone named Velouria ... but that's irrelevant, isn't it. This song has a real melody for you to pick your teeth with ... comparatively speaking, this might be a pop song! But, nah. This is your awesome old underground old Pixies. Allison 9/10 Fast paced, dirty, and fun. It's very well played. Cool. Is She Weird 10/10 How on earth did the Pixies come up with so many catchy songs? ... Their songs in their previous albums were completely awesome without the catchy songs. This album, it's like a double bonus! Ana 10/10 ...Is this grunge? ... I never thought that it could be so awesome. This is, yet, another phenomenally catchy song. It is a slower and more murky, but it's one hundred percent and totally awesome. FNOIHENORIN!!!! All Over the World 9/10 Five and a half minutes seems like an eternity in the world of the Pixies ... Even though this is as well-played as anything on the album, I don't find it as enjoyable for some reason. Perhaps the blame for that goes to the melody ... while it's still pretty good, it's not that catchy. This is still a cool song!! Dig For Fire 8.5/10 Hmmm... Still pretty awesome in its own pre-grungy way. It's got a good sense of class and, for all the funness in China, it's a nice song. But ... this is kind of not impressive relatively, I hate to say it. Down to the Well 9/10 I really like that funny sort of squeaky sound in the background ... but that's only a minor thing to this completely-awesome grungified song that'll put any weak-souled person to their knees. ... Well, other than being completely grungified (loud), this song really isn't anything *that* special. The Happening 9/10 A really classy groove! And then comes a distorted guitar and Black Francis's enormous screamin' lungs ... This is yet another neat song from The Pixies. (This sounds kinda like a Stooges song to me ... which I would never complain about.) Blown Away 9.5/10 They did a very nice job here getting that conflicting electric guitar in here ... and the detached singing makes this one sound rather unique and awesomely bizarre ... in that pre-grunge sort of way. Hang Wire 9/10 PIXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXIESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS. Stormy Weather 9/10 This song sounds a little bit poppy if you ask me (if it wasn't for all those distorted guitars and whatnot). The chorus sounds like a Beatles anthem!!! ... Not that this is a bad thing, of course. Havalina 9.5/10 What's a havalina? Is that a kind of herbal tea? ... Or is it the name of a babe? ... Both go well with water. ...... Hey! I like this song! It's kinda spooky and surreal! That's not something you'd expect from your average ordinary pre-grungers. Do you wanna senda mea commenta herea? |
