Whoah! That's better! ... I'm not sure what the dilly was there, but it's all fixed now. Now... what am I doing. Oh yes! I'm writing about PIXIES! That one band from the late 80s who started doing what I might like to consider an artsier version of hard rock. ... You know, that was the time in ye history of rock-and-roll that the hair bands were all the rage (and people with taste in music were probably in total musical regression ... stuck somewhere in 1975 somewhere). And then this excellent new band comes out! They sound hard rock, but there's a certain, distinctive, and artsy quality about it that makes it something wonderfully unique.

Of course, this wasn't for the layperson! Those still stuck in 1975 can keep on listening to Bruce Springsteen and Black Sabbath records. This was for the college crowd ... who could take it. This was not for the marijuana crowd. It was for the crack crowd. Today, now that this type of music is old and we had the huge grunge explosion thanks to Nirvana, this EP isn't anything out of the ordinary (and their records are popular and widely available at commercial CD stores). But this is still an amazing album. All the songs are great and danged fun to listen to! Woowooo! Grunge is usually not this good. It's usually ugly and tiresome. This is edgy and exciting. You'll be surprised. I'm not wearing pants. That surprised me, also, when I found that out a couple seconds ago.

Overall Album Score: 9.2 out of 10 (They hit the ground running with this excellent EP...)

Average Song Score: 9.0 (The Pixies launched themselves onto this wonderful world of ours with some great songs! ... You've got to love the sound, unless you're old.)

Album Tilt: 9.0 (A good EP. The songs are short, concise, and 101 percent awesome.)

Artist Rating: 9.5 (I dig the sound! The musical innovations are both amazing and entertaining.)

Track Reviews

Caribou 9.5/10

Caribooooooooooooooooooou! (Sorry, but that chorus is so excellent and haunting that I could hardly contain myself!) I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that the Pixies very debut sounds exactly like the stuff they would do later on. It even features some of Black Francis's SCREAMING! ... Great screaming. If you've ever wanted to hear great screaming, you've got to hear Pixies albums. Screw Nirvana. ... They were wan-nah-bees.

Vamos 8.5/10

Dirty and sloppy! ... (I rarely *enjoy* stuff that is dirty and sloppy, so this score is remarkably high.) The distorted guitars are rip-roaring (I really like that excellent buzzing one ... mmmm!). I don't care much for the rhythm section, but since when does my opinion about bands such as the Pixies matter for ANYTHING? There's more SCREAAAAAMINGGGGGG. Always a good thing. Yup.

Isla De Enchanta 9/10

These songs are sooooo short. You'd almost think that by the number of the tracks in here, this'd be a whole album. But these things are hardly 2 minutes long. This is yet another awesome pre-grunge song that'll do your eardrums in for good (if you're listening to it properly, that is). ... I love the sound! (Of course!)

Ed is Dead 9.5/10

This one has a pretty good melody, I say! ... It's better than the other melodies on the EP so far. Not only that, but it continues to feature that Pixies pre-grunge sound with all those ugly but excellent electric guitars. WooHOoOOoo! Ed can die everyday in my book.

The Holiday Song 9/10

Of course, you're going to have to like the Pixies sound to appreciate this band ... I mean, that's OBVIOUS! (What I'm getting at is this band isn't for everyone.) ... This is another HEAVY song with a lot of LOUD guitars that's completely awesome.

Nimrod's Son 8.5/10

He said a bad word! ... Oooooooo! ... And he's screaming a little bit more! ... Ooooooo! ... And there's more of that HEAVY GRUNGE GUITAR IN HERE!!!! ... Oooooooo! ... No wonder Kurt Cobain was such a nutball. He worshipped this band.

I've Been Tired 9.5/10

Rapping??? Hmmmm! ... Well, the lyrics are *really* funny and the groove is really awesome. ... Oddly enough, I like the rapping part much more than that loud, raucous chorus. Perhaps it's time for me to start listening to Public Enemy albums...

Levitate Me 9/10

Again, IT'S THE SOUND THAT'S AWESOME!!!! ... Listen to this song and tell me that these guys weren't innovative. Entertaining and the melody is good! ...... This EP debut from one of rock's most awesome cult bands is not to be missed! (But just you wait until you hear their later albums... whewwww!)
