Overall Album Score: 9.3 out of 10 Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!! Many of us, I'm sure, know at least the legacy of The Pixies. You know ... they're that band that Kurt Cobain of Nirvana said really influenced him. Me, I was never a Nirvana fan or a grunge fan in general, and I hadn't heard of the Pixies until David Bowie did a cover of "Cactus" for his Heathen album (...but don't judge me about that ... my music fandom was still taking off in 2002.) And, whoah!!!! ... The Pixies are freaking awesome!!!!! ... Yeah, everything that you remember about Nirvana's grunge music, the Pixies did in 1988. This album has got everything you love about grunge music, and everything you hate about grunge music, you'll probably end up loving here. The distorted grunge guitars are completely awesome on Sufer Rosa 99.8 percent of the time! (I knocked off a bit for "I'm Amazed," but that still has some awesome distorted guitar all the same.) ... The melodies, generally speaking, aren't too much to get excited about ... but this is almost like punk music. Why would you need a melody so much if what you're trying achieve is a general attitude? For the most part, this is ugly music that's really fun to listen to! ... It took me forever to get around to reviewing this, too, because I enjoyed listening to this so much! ... My favorite song on here, "Where is My Mind?" is really moody and atmospheric. "Cactus" is the most melodic (abiet it's very simple) song on the album (still with great attitude). The other songs on the album are probably violent, and kick-butt awesome! ... The Pixies rule over all! Overall Album Score: 9.3 out of 10 (Really ... freaking ... good!) Average Song Score: 9.0 (Every song on here is good! ... And probably half of the songs are even *great*!) Album Tilt: 9.5 (A really freaking awesome album to listen to! I hope that I'm not overrating it, but ... dangit, I really enjoyed this one!!!) Artist Rating: 9.5 (Okay, I'll give this a boost in the artistic category as well. As someone who grew up in the grunge and post-grunge era, it's hard for me to believe that grunge's roots was artistically appealing.) Track Reviews Bone Machine 8.5/10 A really really good grinding riff here makes the song ugly, dirty, and fun as heck! It's a wild song that makes the adrenaline run through me like no 80s death metal band could ever even hope to do. Great distorted guitars ... not really a great melody, but that's not really the point. The guitars are all I need! Break My Body 9/10 The holy precursors to Nirvana give us a bunch of other really nice distorted guitar riffs. This song does have a more workable melody, which is certainly a positive! ... The adrenaline rush I seem to be getting from the guitars are the song's best quality, though. Something Against You 8.5/10 Starts off with some odd strumming of the electric guitar ... and then some wild, conflicted distorted guitars come in and mess everything up! ... This song makes an impact, and it's under two minutes long and has no lyrics. Broken Face 9.5/10 Bizarre vocal performances makes this song stand out, in particular. The melody is pretty good, but the best aspect of it are the effective and really loud distorted guitars. Quite awesome! ...... You'd almost think that the escalating grunge movement would have been a positive thing. Gigantic 8.5/10 Whoah! This is a looooooong song! (It's almost four minutes long!) ... I really enjoy this one, too, from its menacing bass-line and its rip-roaring chorus. Again, this is ugly music that'll not only get your adrenaline flowing, but it's also really fun to listen to! River Euphrates 8/10 Another good bass-line and even better distorted guitars going off all over the place! ... The 'lah-lah' vocals all throughout make this one particularly unique. It's another pretty good song ... unfortunately, this one does seem to do slightly less for me than all the previous songs, and many of the subsequent ones. Where is My Mind? 10/10 EASILY one of my favorite songs from the album. Its atmosphere is very spooky and mellow! ... And it even finds time to have some distorted guitar in it! I even enjoy the melodic quality of it (even though it's not Paul McCartney ... but, dude, if it had a McCartian melody, the song would probably be worse off in this case). This is very moody and very effective!!!!! I love it!!!!!!!!!! It's a near 10plus, too! Cactus 10/10 I'm probably letting a previous bias get in the way of this, because this song appears on one of my most favorite albums ever (Heathen by David Bowie). And, heck! I love both versions! "Cactus," as far as its melodic qualities, is probably the best on the album, and it even has attitude! ... Now, comparing the versions, The Pixies' are rawer, and David's is lusher. Both are stupendous! ... Love the Cactus! It's too short, though! Such awesome songs could go on for 6 minutes and hardly become tiresome. Tony's Theme 10/10 Okay, I'm giving this one a 10 as well. I really like the punkish feel of this one. I like the melody, the distorted guitars ... and even the part of the lyrics that are spoken! Another unique and utterly enjoyable song from The Pixies! Oh My Golly! 9.5/10 A wonderfully sloppy tune! ... The adrenaline rush you'd get from this one is as strong as ever. ... Wow! ... The Pixies are like The Stooges doing Fun House, except they're a lot quirkier. You Fuckin Die! Fourty-second seconds long, and has some guy talking with some expletives. ... It's kind of funny, I guess. I'd rather not score it, though. Vamos 8/10 Whoah ... uhhhhh ... this one is very sloppy. The distorted electric guitar is pretty good, but this time, it doesn't make the song particularly enjoyable. Not a bad song, though. Lesser bands would do **a lot** worse with it! I'm Amazed 8.5/10 He was into field hockey players? ... This isn't the best song, certainly, but this is another really fun, adrenaline pumpin' pre-grunge song! ... More of the awesome awesomest from dee Peexees. Brick is Red 9/10 This song is an easy 9/10! ... Maybe even a 9.5/10! It doesn't pump your adrenaline, but it's a really fine song that's awesome-fun to listen to! It has a nice little groove (that sounds all threatening and awesome and stuff) and even some nice grungy sounding distorted guitar. 'Tis a great one to close yer album wit!
