Made in China

Overall Album Score: 6.5 out of 10

First of all, I don't at all hate the band for making this album, in principle. It would have been much worse if these were outtakes from abandon songs from The Miracle, and they tried piecing those songs together just to make a buck. This was an actual effort that Mercury wanted to see completed. ... So, the band ultimately followed his last wishes! Besides which, there obviously would have been a hoard of angry fans if this album wasn't released, so ... the remaining members of Queen did this for the fans, too.

However, since apparently Freddie was such a spirited guy (and his voice was recorded here during his VERY LAST DAYS), his spirit left the album when he died and the band did little to resurrect it. My guess is they lost basic interest in the thing (because, you know, this was released a little LATE, in 1995 and Mercury died in 1991). Many of these songs seem like they originated with just Mercury's voice and nothing else. Later on, backing instrumentals were added to give the songs body. The album's foremost problem is that the backing instrumentals are no good! NO GOOD!!!! ... But what can you honestly expect from a "posthumous" release?

(I find it particularly odd that Queen, having been one of the most "democratic" bands ever totally fell apart upon Mercury's death ... I guess they figured there was no point in going on after that.)

Oddly enough, the worst songs of the album appear at the very beginning and stronger material begins to show up nearer the middle part of the album. The best song is easily "My Life Has Been Saved," because the melody is pretty catchy! There really isn't a horrible song on here. The worst song scored a 6, which isn't so bad. (A few songs in The Miracle were worse than those, if you're looking for a comparison.)

This is really only an album for diehard Queen fans. (And, I'm apparently not enough of a Queen fan to really find any value in this!) But I am, in theory, happy this was released, even though it could have been better done by the surviving band mates. YOU GUYS ARE TALENTED, TOO!!!!!!!!! IT'S NOT LIKE YOU GUYS HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE BAND'S SUCCESS ALL ALONG!!!!!!! Hmmhmhmhmhm.

Overall Album Score: 6.5 out of 10 (Innuendo was the way the band exited. Made in Heaven is just a posthumous release that probably didn't have much spirit to begin with!)

Average Song Score: 6.9 (The songs needed a lot of work ... but, I guess that's because Mercury died before the record was complete. ... Still, the other three should have done more work on it!)

Album Tilt: 6.5 (It starts and ends with some of the album's poorest songs ... that's usually not good! ... The album as a whole is rather tedious to sit through sometimes.)

Artist Rating: 6.0 (Again, the living-three really, really needed to work on this some more.)

Track Reviews

It's a Beautiful Day 6.5/10

...Why it is a beautiful day! ... But ... Hey! I'm listening to this song and it's, like, 11 at night! What gives? ... I'm not sure what the real point of this song was ... it was just some silly piano song Freddie was singing about the weather and then there are some synthesizers at the end. ... Um ... thanks, freaking Vangelis wannabes.

Made in Heaven 6.5/10

...You know... this really isn't a horrible song. But what was with the production? The song is catchy enough ... Brian May coughs up a few good licks with his geetar ... Freddie's voice isn't DEAD ... and ... uhhh ... it pretends to have an uplifting atmosphere, but ... the production is all very ... uhhh ... misfired. And this freaking song is, like, two and a half minutes toooooooo long.

Let Me Live 6/10

This song sounds like bad Christian rock. ... It's pretty much an insult to say that it sounds like Christian rock, but *bad* Christian rock? ... Dudes! ... This song is cheesy to the extreme, even though I'd imagine that this song meant enough to Freddie Mercury when he originally sang this. ... It just didn't turn out very good. And, again, this is a few minutes too long.

Mother Love 7 /10

Oh, finally, here we go! This song has a fairly decent melody and stuff (even though it's not particularly catchy) and this contains one of the more passionate singing performances by Mercury on the album. ... Though, overall, the song is again too long and is boring. The whole audience applause thing at the end was STUPIDDDDDD.

My Life Has Been Saved 8.5/10

This still sounds like Christian rock. But noticed I didn't say *bad* Christian rock! The melody is SOLID and it has enough momentum to keep it going throughout the whole song. ... Perhaps more importantly, this is just about the right length (less than three and a half minutes) and the production is cheesy but ... fitful, I guess. Yeah ... finally a truly worthwhile song from this freaking album.

I Was Born To Love You 7/10

This is also a rather solid song, but ... unfortunately, this is equivalent to one of those freaking misfired things from The Miracle. There's enough spirit in the song, but the melody isn't catchy at all.

Heaven For Everyone 7.5/10

...Another pretty solid song. And I'd say it would have been an 8.5 if it weren't so long. A tip ... take out that freaking crappy chorus and those elevator-music noises! ... Yeahhhhhhhh ... This band really sucks when Freddie died, man. No wonder they had to break up.

Too Much Love Will Kill You 7.5/10

Again, this is a fairly solid song ... Why did these guys put the worst songs at the beginning of the album? ... DUDES!!! ... I mean, this isn't a *great* song, because it's kinda boring, but ... this is better than those freaking songs at the beginning of the album. Dudes.

You Don't Fool Me 7/10

...It might have helped if this song didn't sound so CHEEEESYYYY!!! ... but it's another not-horrible song other than that. It has a pretty nice danceable groove even though the melody might not be all that special.

A Winter's Tale 6.5/10

There was POTENTIAL with this song! ... But it ultimately turned into this boring, cruddy old song that I don't really give a crap about, even though I am forced into feeling sorry for the near-to-death Freddie Mercury, who is apparently singing about his winter days.

It's a Beautiful Day (Reprise) 6/10

The first one wasn't too hot to begin with ... and this one is worse. ... The instrumentation is too freaking airy! This song breaks into a rock discourse, though, and it has a nice enough groove, but ... eh ... I'm not excited at all.

Yeah

Yeah.
