Wayne Tang of Dove

Overall Album Score: 7.7 out of 10

The Raveonettes don't do anything but prove that they are good artists. They *really* know how to make a song sound very hard and very creepy, and they're usually good enough in the studio to make these very simple (mostly 50s-pop derived) melodies quite interesting.

BUT WHY THE CRAP DO YOU HAVE TO PUT ALL THESE FREAKING STUPID DRONING NOISES IN ALL YOUR SONGS????!!! DO YOU THINK PEOPLE ACTUALLY ENJOY THIS, OR ARE YOU DOING IT TO BE ARTISTIC??? BECAUSE IT'S DRIVING ME TOTALLY BONKERRRRRSSSSSS!!!!!

Seriously, while these songs are all well-written and usually catch and stuff, they simply *had* to put all that irritating fuzzy noises all throughout the songs. I mean, it's as if we didn't have enough of this stuff from The Velvet Underground's "Sister Ray" to last a lifetime!

I probably was being too nice when I sat down and scored the tracks! Although, I did find it tolerable up until the fourth track ... After that, I was nuts! We seriously need someone to smack them Danish!

Overall Album Score: 7.7 out of 10 (It's a high-quality album that was really screwed over.)

Average Song Score: 8.1 (...They are interesting songs. Most of them are worse than they should be.)

Album Tilt: 7.0 (Absolutely irritating.)

Artist Rating: 8.0 (I appreciate that they're trying to be unique here, and they're trying to develop their sound. ... Just don't do this again, please.)

Track Reviews

Remember 8.5/10

Very muddy and murky, but the riffage and the melody are pretty likable. ... I mean the melody is *simple*, but it's nice. And they're doing a really great job selling this whole murky thing. Such things didn't end with The Velvet Underground!

That Great Love Sound 9.5/10

Very interesting. Again, it's very murky and muddy. And again, the melody isn't great but it's likable. What pushes this one above the other one is its absolutely INTENSE aura! The song seems to get even more intense as it goes along and ... eek!!! ... There's some murder-screaming in the background at times!!! EEEEKKKK!!!!!!!

Noisy Summer 8/10

Very 50s-ish melody. It doesn't do much to disguise itself either, with the clapping at the very beginning of it. ... And it's also muddy, murky and inherently evil too, I suspect. I'm not a big fan at all of those evil "demon screams" going on all throughout this, just because it serves no purpose but to blanket the whole song with something that's rather irritating to me. ... Interesting to think of it, though.

The Love Gang 8/10

...Again, what's with the fuzzy noise? Do you expect me to enjoy a song just because someone blanketed it with fuzzy noise? ... I mean, they're interesting, but ... that only gives you *so much*. They only do that a little bit here, anyway. And the melody is still all 50s-ish. It starts out kind of minimal an inoffensive, but then it gets all weird. (Though, not weird in a particularly good way ... the fuzzy noise!!!)

Let's Rave On 7.5/10

STOP IT!!!! STOP IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This really would have been a good song if they would have stepped back and heard how this sounded before going to press with it. ... And there's no use arguing that it's experimental, because ... DANG IT, WE DON'T NEED ANOTHER VELVET UNDERGROUND!!! ... Especially in 2003. Oh, man.

Dirty Eyes (Sex Don't Sell) 7/10

I'm not too thrilled with the melody. The rhythm is just pounding and doesn't do much of consequence. Umnhnhnhnnhnnhnnhnnn... But what can I say that's good? NOT AS MUCH BLANKET OF ANNOYING DEMON-SCREAM/FUZZY THINGS.

Love Can Destroy Everything 8.5/10

As far as these songs have been going, this one is pretty nice. I mean, there's this repetitive and monotonous beep all throughout this that I'd just assume would quit, but ... the blankets of sound are more selective here. The melody is fine. The guitar playing is nice and hard (for a mid-tempoed song). Yes, indeed. I'm only slightly irritated here! Way to go, Danish people!!

Heartbreak Stroll 10/10

Oh, now if only the Raveonettes would quit being stupid and make their songs sound more like this I wouldn't have a problem with them! Yeah, this song is VERYYYY heavy, while still singing an oldies melody (maybe more along the lines of early Beatles) ... but there are NO blanket of distortion sound, and I can appreciate what The Raveonettes are trying to do. The album's best song.

Little Animal 7/10

A little too distant this time ... and I really just wish they would STOP IT WITH THE IRRITATING NOISES!!!!!!!!! THEY ARE DRIVING ME UP THE WALL!!!!!!! ... Other than that, this song is okay. It's all heavy and stuff. And the melody is pure 60s pop. It should have been less tough to sit through. This is more tedious and plodding than the others.

Untamed Girls 7.5/10

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Chain Gang of Love 7/10

(I had to turn it off and take a breather ... oooooooooooohhhhhhh ... and an IB Preufen.) And I needed it! Because I'm enjoying this song more! (Or maybe that's only because it's not very irritating ... yeah, that's the real reason. I appreciate it, anyway.) This isn't a great song, though ... it's just ... um ... played for creeps.

The Truth About Johnny 8.5/10

They keep those blankets of sound more in the background this time (thank GOODNESS), ant this one sounds like a cricket is performing the longest chirp ever recorded by mankind. And so I'm left to actually listen to the *song* and not to the annoying rips and roars ... and ... um ... Well, this definitely isn't a 10, but it's totally freaking me out! (But in a good way, this time ... I'm freaked out and I'm enjoying it.)

New York Was Great 8.5/10

Like "The Truth About Johnny" the blankets of noise are kept THANKFULLY in the background, and I'm left to be totally freaked out and willing to accept my headache. The sounds infest your ears like some type of evil spirit took over in there ... and you kind of think it's cool. ... Oh!! Is this album finally over???! I'm so happy!!!!!!!!!
