Some Girls Came By and Told Me to Give You Their Number ... But I Forgot To Write It Down

Overall Album Score: 9.0 out of 10

Well, well, well, well, well! Now ain't this a pleasant surprise! After a string of non-9-scoring albums, The Stones completely come back with this lovely little whopper. It's polished and commercial to the core, but that at least means they've been taking mind of their work and decided to create a bunch of songs that moronic peon, self-elected music critics like me can enjoy.

On this one Mick Jagger leads the band to follow the trends (it was 1978) by performing a few disco songs and some nice-and-tight punk-rock songs. And all of these songs are splendid. The major disco song is "Miss You," which is surprisingly *not* groan inducing, but you'll likely be grooving along with that wicked DISCO GROOVE! That's really the only disco song on here, so... The punk songs are also very good, too! Although, I think you'll discover that apart from the tightening of the sound, punk-rock as the Stones knew it isn't fundamentally different from The Stones of the days of yore (1965, thereabouts). Plus, there's a stupid but HILarious country-western tune in here ("Far Away Eyes") and a few regular old Rolling Stones songs in here for good measure.

Oh yes. This is a good album. It's not significant by any means ... it's just danged fun.

Overall Album Score: 9.0 out of 10 (The Stones are baaaaaaaack ... for a year.)

Average Song Score: 9.1 (It's been quite awhile since we've seen such a danged strong collection of tunes from The Stones.)

Album Tilt: 9.0 (This is a nice, fun album! It's not high art, but that never mattered.)

Artist Rating: 9.0 (It's not high art, but that never mattered. ... Oh, heck, I'm repeating myself.)

Track Reviews

Miss You 9.5/10

If you've ever wondered what a spankingly awesome disco groove would sound like, then listen to this! THIS IS SPANKINGLY AWESOME! The groove is catchy and menacing ... you know, like the Rolling Stones used to be! Except it has a disco beat! That's all I really have to say about this. Nice groove!!

When the Whip Comes Down 10/10

This is more of a regular Rolling Stones song (with a punk edge) *and the collective unit of music goers goes whew*. The lyrics of this one are a little ... explicit ... But at least the music is very good. It's tight, rocking, and menacing ... whoah ... like The Rolling Stones were in their heyday! YES! THE ROLLING STONES HAD A HEYDAY! AND THIS REMINDS ME OF THAT!!!!!

Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me) 8.5/10

ANOTHER cool song. (And it's of the reg'lar Rolling Stones variety.) It's a slower tempoed one, which is cool with me. The riff is pretty good. It was well-played, and well-mixed, even. I like it, though it might have benefited from being a little bit shorter.

Some Girls 9/10

I really like that high-pitched guitar in here in this otherwise slow-paced but menacing little punk-rock number. Again, these lyrics ... they're funny sometimes, but hmmm ... The music of the song is good, though! I like listening to it! It's way cool!

Lies 9.5/10

Again! This is a really nice tight punk riff! Man ... this is pretty good. It's not perfect, but dude! Real punk bands were hardly better at it themselves. It's nicely played and was nicely polished in the studio. Yet another good Rolling Stones number.

Far Away Eyes 8/10

OH CRAP!!!! THIS IS COUNTRY MUSIC, ISN'T IT!!!!! Grrrr............... Oh well, at least it's funny. The song starts out with a country backing music (with a slide guitar and everything) and Mick Jagger adopting a redneck American accent and saying some funny stuff. And then they start singing ... this melody isn't bad for country music. It's 100 percent derivative, but I think it's supposed to be. I hate country music, but this is pretty fun.

Respectable 9/10

This is now The Stones own brand of blues-rock they established back with Beggar's Banquet! It's a blaaaaaaaaaaaaaaast from the paaaaaaaaaaaaaaaast. And it's pretty darn good, too. It certainly wouldn't have hurt Banquet at all if this song was included instead of some of the ones that were. This is very nice.

Before They Make Me Run 8/10

I like the bass line! Other than that, the melody isn't SUPER GREAT, but it's good. It's merely a strong and mildly enjoyable song.

Beast of Burden 9/10

This is a thoughtful little ditty (relatively speaking). It has a great melody ... I like the slight Bee Gees impression in here, even though this is NOT a disco song. It's played very well and it has a good melody.

Shattered 10/10

And, the album closes with this NICE punk-rock number. It's catchy, it's creative, it's stylin' ... yes, I think you will enjoy this one. I don't feel like endlessly praising it, so I'm done. I'm going to go to the kitchen and have some kiwi. I like kiwi.

Some other girls called and told you to send me a comment about this album and send it here where their panties are.
