The Sistahs want to to (re)visit their main page! ... Over thisaway! The Gluestick Brothers
Overall Album Score: 8.1 out of 10 I'm not sure what to make of this. Although, there's one thing I do know: I like it. The Scissor Sisters debut contains everything embarrassing about both 70s disco and 00s teen-pop. Stupid grooves, stupid song production, bad melodies ...... no, wait. While all of this stuff resembles bad 70s disco and 00s teen-pop, for some reason, this stuff isn't actually bad. The Scissor Sisters basically emerged from a waste bin of influences, but they actually know how to piece a decent song together and write a good hook or two. Verrrry peculiar. A few of these songs aren't really disco or teen-pop, but most of them are ... and most of them are good. The lowest song score on here is a 6.5 -- that song got a bit annoying for me. The top score is a 10 (a song called "Take Your Mama"), which is a song so catchy and fun that I couldn't help but love it. "Lovers in the Backseat" (a song that scored a 9), in particular, is a dead-ringer for a regular old Backstreet Boys song ... except that it's actually a very solid song. The reason I think this is all very peculiar is that the band surely could have done better writing real music ... you know, prog-rock, post-modern-alternative stuff, or some type of art-rock. But nope. They tackle your Britney Spears-pop. Talented people don't normally tackle Britney Spears-pop. And the question I'm wondering ... are they doing this to be liked by teenager girls? ... or are they doing this to prove something. And, I don't really know what they would be trying to prove. That the styles of music that us snobby rock critics are so used to shunning could actually be good? Do they really need to prove that? I think they're just aiming for the teenaged girls, but I would like to think that I'm wrong. This stuff is probably too good to appear on the "Now" compilations, anyway. ... Eh, whatever. I enjoyed this monster they created, and that should end all discussion. (Oh ... I'll mention the lyrics, even though such was the least of my concern ... They're interesting, I'll tell you! I think they're generally more intelligent than they seem to let on sometimes.) Overall Album Score: 8.1 out of 10 (A peculiarly strong 00s pop album.) Average Song Score: 8.3 (In spite of the unsettling number of 00s pop songs, pretty much all of this is actually pretty good.) Album Tilt: 8.0 (I really want to give this an 8.5, but I can't. My stupid instinct is telling me something.) Artist Rating: 8.0 (I can't really be sure what the Scissor Sisters were trying to do. Clearly a band with such talent could go forth and make a better album doing prog-rock or something. Are they heroes for writing some tasteful 00s songs, or are they just greedy and hoping for some sort of major monetary compensation?) Track Reviews Laura 8/10 CLEARLY pop ... and it's not even clever pop ... but ...... It works! Somehow, on the face of this planet, there exists a 00s pop artist who manages to make well with that stupid genre. The song doesn't even have that catchy of a melody. Its production and solid songwriting makes this one somehow entertaining, overall. Its style is pretty cheap, but the execution wasn't. Take Your Mama 10/10 Wow! That's a real 10, too. Although, I'd be too hesitant to call this true 00s pop. It could have been done in the 70s, I think. Pretty ordinary soul-pop if you put a bit more groove in it. At any rate, this is a very good song ... it's verrrry catchy, and it doesn't achieve that by repeating the melody 8 billion times. Solid! Comfortably Numb 9/10 Yup. This is the same song by Pink Floyd they're doing here. And I honestly don't hold it very high in respect ... Well, I'll have to give it some credit for not sounding (even close) to the original Pink Floyd version. It has falsetto voices as opposed to Pink Floyd's smooth, deep voices, and this sounds like a teen-beat club type song. But ... heck ... they don't butcher it, and it is very different. Indeed, it's a guilty pleasure ... and I rarely ever call 'teen-beat' a pleasure, so ... so, I can't really hate it. I'll give it a 9, even though I still think that's a bit inflated. ... Eh, what the heck, anyway! It's my bloody web site! I do whatever I want to in this land! Mary 8.5/10 A very good ballad! ... It's not even a poppy ballad, particularly ... or at least a 00s poppy song. (Dude? Does this band even know what it wants to do? ... 00s pop, 70s pop, whatever.) Quite a bit like a Supertramp ballad was back in 1979. Not that I don't enjoy retro-pop, but seriously! After passing off that teen-beat version of "Comfortably Numb," why do this? ... Eh, what am I complaining about? This is a good song. Lovers in the Backseat 9/10 Neat intro! ... Very prog-rock, but I like it. And then the song escalates into a *drum roll, please* 00s pop song! ... SERIOUSLY, if you're one of those sickos who listens to the stuff the moronic bigwigs puts on those "Now" compilations every year and likes it, really needs to listen to this. The style is a dead ringer to stuff like The Backstreet Boys, except this song is actually good. Catchy melody, intelligent song production ... what's there to lose? Besides your sanity. Tits on the Radio 7.5/10 Oh, brother. Now the word "tits" appears on my web site. I'll be smote for sure. ... About the song, I really want to call this a 70s disco song. It's dancable and has a bit of that pseudo-soul. The groove isn't that good, but the melody is pretty catchy. They made this into a pretty solid song, but it's far from perfect. I find those choppy vocals a bit annoying. (And ... dude! Those lyrics are inane.) Filthy/Gorgeous 6.5/10 We wish that he hadn't heard that groove 8 billion times in various different places. And, again, I'm not too thrilled about hearing it here. This is a disco song that's got some clear 00s influences on it. Yup, it's catchy and poppy ... but it's not that enjoyable. Music is the Victim 8.5/10 This is pure pop music done with enough energy to make it fun. The tune isn't that great, but there are a few actual hooks in it ... which is more than I can say for ... uhhhh ... Madonna and all of her evil spawns. Better Luck Next Time 8/10 Not an offensive song (and by 'offensive,' I mean that this isn't so blatantly 00s pop) ... but it's insignificant by all standards. A few hooks in it, but nobody will care, because this is unmemorable. I Can't Come Quickly Enough 7.5/10 This one really starts out insignificantly, but when this ballad-type song reaches into its chorus, it manages to deliver a few good hooks. Certainly a more modern song, but it probably won't even totally offend the most ardent of 00s pop haters. Return to Oz 9.5/10 Alright, DUDES! You so totally gave us either 00s teen-pop or 70s retro-pop throughout this whole freak-show of an album ... and you end it with 70s-like FOLK-POP???? Will the insanity ever end? This is very close to the Strawbs-brand version of Folky-progressive rock to be more precise. What's strikes more amazing is that this song is actually very good. ... Alright, so are the Scissor Sisters only writing this ONLY song using a tasteful style just to prove that they could? Hmmhmmhmm. Such has been the poser of the evening, after all. Seriously ...
